Glass

I grew up in a rural setting near Two Rivers, Wisconsin, where I and my siblings developed a love of nature. Art and craft projects were also a frequent part of our growing up. Through the years I have explored a variety of art mediums including photography, pottery, painting, woodworking and even lampshade making.

My fascination with glass began in 1987, when I took a UW Madison glass fusing mini course. This interest remained on the back burner until 1989 when I first had access to a kiln and began experimenting with scrap window glass, glass paints and a pottery kiln. As glass fusing became more popular, I was able to purchase glass designed specifically for fusing, in a variety of colors, and a true fusing kiln. Over time I’ve taken classes and explored many fusing techniques.

My fused glass art often evolves from the graceful forms in nature; the delicate curvature of a petal, the unfurling of a fern or the sway of a stem in the breeze. I have a special affection for nature and all types of flowers and you will see them represented often in my work. Most pieces begin with me sketching either from nature directly, from pictures or memory. Our rural setting and multiple flower beds provide ample inspiration. Both the symmetry and asymmetry I see in nature please me. I especially enjoy “painting” with crushed glass and working with transparent glass because of how sun lights it up. Glass was made to be lit. Transparent glass just explodes with color in the sun. Similarly, glass earrings sparkle like jewels in the sun. My fused glass jewelry and art pieces are a fusion of my love of flowers, nature and glass. My hope is that my art will mesmerize, and delight you as it does me.

I currently live in a rural setting in south central WI where I exhibit at area art shows/galleries, teach classes from my home studio and am active in area art organizations. I am also beginning to learn metalsmithing skills to incorporate into my glass work.
